Potential Sign of Life on Venus

An international team of astronomers have confirmed that the cloud tops of Venus contain traces of phosphine, a gas that is produced by microbial life. The gas is also produced by some Earth-based industrial processes. That said, no known non-biological processes can create phosphine in the conditions found on Venus.

The find raises two intriguing possibilities: One, the possibility that Venus may harbor life in its clouds. And two, the phosphine could be the result of some unknown chemical process, which would be an enticing subject of scientific study.

In-N-Out Burger

My first In-N-Out Burger.

Yesterday, I was treated to a new experience: I had my first In-N-Out burger. Possibly not considered as earth-shattering by many. But being a Florida boy, I don't get the opportunity to partake very often. For the record, it was delicious! Curious about this fast-food wonder, I did some digging and learn the following:

In-N-Out Burger is an American regional chain of fast food restaurants with locations primarily in the American Southwest and Pacific coast. It was founded October 22, 1948 in Baldwin Park, California by married couple Harry and Esther Snyder. The chain has 329 locations and is currently headquartered at University Tower in Irvine, California and has slowly expanded outside Southern California into the rest of California, as well as into Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas, and Oregon. The current owner is Lynsi Snyder, the Snyders' only grandchild of the founders.

As the chain has expanded, it has opened several distribution centers in addition to its original Baldwin Park location. The new facilities, located in Lathrop, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Draper, Utah; and Dallas, Texas will provide for potential future expansion into other parts of the country.

In-N-Out Burger has resisted franchising its operations or going public; one reason is the prospect of quality or customer consistency being compromised by excessively rapid business growth. The company's business practices have been noted for employee-centered personnel policies. For example, In-N-Out is one of the few fast food chains in the United States to pay its employees more than state and federally mandated minimum wage guidelines – starting at US$11.00 per hour in California, as of May 2017. The In-N-Out restaurant chain has developed a highly loyal customer base, and has been rated as one of the top fast food restaurants in several customer satisfaction surveys.

August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse

I recently had a great adventure, traveling with a friend to South Carolina to see the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. The trip was an early birthday present to myself (as I write this, it is now my birthday).

I chronicled the adventure in my astronomy blog, including photos and, also, links to two great videos by friends. I welcome you to check out the blog and relive my journey to the shadow. Click the link below.
